I woke up knowing it was a New Year. Aware that 2012 was behind me and that 2013 lay open, ready to be devoured. What I love most about this time of year is that on the street, in the metro, on the bus, and everywhere people are awake. So often I look around when I’m in line at the grocery store or waiting for the metro or bus and I scour faces to see light in people around me. Many times I’ll strike up a conversation, because it feels like what’s lacking is intimacy, connection. And it is this time of year when people feel they can connect to each other, because everyone is sharing in the same moment. Everyone is looking forward to a New Year. During this time, I think how much we all have in common, and my wish for the New Year is for us to realize we always do. Because at the end of the day, when I’m snuggling in at night, I’m wishing the same as you: To feel connected. To be seen. To be heard.
