I heard the phrase global listening the other day and it really struck a chord with me. When I hear this phrase I imagine myself in a conversation or in a meeting listening to everything. I’m not editing out information or being affected by the words that create thoughts and opinions I’m simply allowing the other person to speak and the cars outside to honk and the coffee machine to buzz. Without being combative or opposing, without supporting or engaging all I’m doing is listening. There’s no attachment to the noises or words.
It’s difficult to practice global listening because we get very caught up in our opinions of what others are saying and we react to what seems wrong or right in our eyes. We easily hear what we want to out of need to prove, defend, or justify. But what if we chose not to? For one day we decided you know what…today I’m simply going to listen. I’m not going to react. I’m not going to get drawn in. I’m not going to judge. All I want to do today is listen. Listen to everybody who is talking to me – taking it all in – not cutting them off or talking over them, but creating more of a collaborative.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could see the real problems.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could see the real solutions.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could enjoy the moment I’m in.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could see the person in front of me.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could create more opportunity.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could learn to participate in uncomfortable conversations.
If I listened without attachment maybe I could create safety and intimacy in my relationships.
If I listened without attachment maybe I wouldn’t need to talk as much.
If I listened without attachment maybe I wouldn’t jump when I hear a loud noise.
If I listened without attachment maybe I wouldn’t react but instead respond.
If I listened without attachment maybe I would be able to make more objective decisions.
If I listened without attachment maybe I would be able to get more done.
How can you globally listen today? And what could listening without attachment do for you?
HI Cynthia.
I really like your monthly emails, and I feel you really know what you’re talking about and are down to earth – in a good way. I had to search you tube to find your videos, and I liked them. Maybe you should do more videos and post links here! Just an idea. Thanks very much for your insight every month.
Mallory
